Dementia – A Growing Issue
According to the World Health Organization:
In 2015, dementia affected 47 million people worldwide (or roughly 5% of the world’s elderly population), a figure that is predicted to increase to 75 million in 2030 and 132 million by 2050. Recent reviews estimate that globally nearly 9.9 million people develop dementia each year; this figure translates into one new case every three seconds.
In the United states alone, 5.8 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s. This number is projected to grow to nearly 14 million within the next 30 years. Between 2000 and 2017, deaths from heart disease have decreased 9%, while deaths from Alzheimer’s have increased 145%. (source: Alzheimer’s Association)
