Dementia Care and Support Late in Life

The Importance of Dementia Care and Support Late in Life

The need for expert, individualized care for those struggling with dementia late in life is paramount. There are complex needs and high levels of morbidity in dementia’s later stages. Individuals suffering from dementia are also less likely to be diagnosed for multiple health conditions; this can cause a faster decline than those without a dementia diagnosis. According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, “People living with dementia who are over 65 have on average four comorbidities, while people without dementia have two on average.” The World Health Organization recognizes the need for multidisciplinary collaboration and active cooperation in treating those with dementia, due to the inherent complications.

GuideStar Eldercare’s expert services include case-finding, diagnosis, psychosocial and pharmacological treatment, as well as consultation for families. Our pioneering care protocols also involve the entire care team within the long-term care and assisted living facilities we work in: primary care; nursing, social services; and pharmacy service teams are involved in our decision making. We recognize the unique difficulties that arise within these populations and strive to provide the highest level of person-centered care. Our priority is the improvement in quality of life for aging adults in long-term care struggling with dementia and other neurocognitive impairments.
