Many dementia patients are being left behind
While dementia is largely associated with cognitive impairments to memory, concentration, and executive function, there are other symptoms of dementia that often precede this cognitive decline. For years, nursing home facilities have struggled to treat BPSD effectively. Many patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias have been prescribed antipsychotic or anticonvulsant drugs to treat their psychiatric symptoms. Widespread overprescription has been the result, with many patients developing dependencies or presenting with worsening cognitive impairment due to the nature of such drugs.

Our clinical fieldwork has demonstrated success in slowing the onset and lowering the severity of dementia symptoms. For this purpose, GuideStar Eldercare recommends the prescription of both an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (e.g. Donepezil) and an NMDA receptor antagonist (Memantine). These two medications have shown to multiply their beneficial effects when taken together.
